If you just received braces, surely you’ve been making adjustments to your lifestyle. You knew you’d have to take care of your smile more while avoiding pesky foods like popcorn, but you didn’t think about kissing with braces. Will you have to give up romance now that you have metal wires and brackets in your mouth? Have no fear! You can still smooch with your braces, and your orthodontist in Rochester has provided some easy yet helpful tips on how to make it a pleasant experience!

Tip #1. Take It Slow

When you first get your braces, there is a slight adjustment period, where you will relearn how to brush, floss, eat, and speak. Keep in mind that you may not be prepared for something as adventurous as a kiss right away, which is totally fine—just take it slow! When you are ready for your initial kiss with braces, being gentle is incredibly important for the safety of you and your partner. Start with closed lips and be very cautious so you don’t bump teeth or catch skin on your braces. When you’re ready for open mouth kissing, be sure to keep you and your partner’s tongues away from your braces because they can get caught or cut on the brackets and wires.

Tip #2. Remember Dental Wax

Dental wax can not only make your braces more comfortable, but it can make kissing more enjoyable for you (and your partner)! You can cover the rough spots of your smile that may snag lips or tongues. In fact, your partner may not even notice that you’re wearing braces if you’re using the dental wax properly. This is a quick and easy way to make kissing something you can look forward to once more.

Tip #3. Keep Your Mouth Clean

The last tip is to keep your smile looking and feeling clean. Of course, this isn’t just for those wearing braces, however oral healthcare is vital when you have an oral appliance. Braces make it more difficult to brush and floss properly, so it’s important that you take the time to maintain good dental hygiene. This will not only help you smile with beauty, but your partner will thank you for keeping your breath fresh!

There is no need to skip out on romance just because you’ve decided to straighten your smile! Use these tips so you and your partner can enjoy each other without any discomfort or irritation.
